NSM Parking Deck | San Antonio, TX

Case Studies, Concrete Repair, Parking Structures, San Antonio, TX

Western Specialty Contractors’ San Antonio branch is performing a concrete repair and strengthening project at a parking structure in San Antonio, TX.

Serving as the prime contractor and working with Walker Consultants, Western is completing a comprehensive scope of repairs designed to improve the structural performance and extend the service life of the parking deck. Work includes installing fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strips on the underside of concrete slabs, concrete beam enlargement, overhead and vertical concrete repairs, rout-and-seal crack repairs and crack injections.

Additional work includes repairs to connection joints at double-tee members, double-tee flanges, and horizontal concrete surfaces, as well as repairs to loose barrier cables and the removal of parking blocks.

One of the project’s primary challenges has been limited access beneath the parking ramp, where the beam enlargement and FRP installation work is being performed. The confined working conditions have made access and material handling more difficult, requiring Western’s team to plan its operations carefully to maintain productivity and safety.

To accelerate the installation of the FRP strips, Western utilized a boom lift to access the underside of the slabs. Because the FRP installation process involves resins and adhesives that could damage or contaminate the equipment, the crew developed a practical solution to protect the lift. The boom lift basket was wrapped in plastic sheeting, while Ram Board was installed on the basket floor to protect it from epoxy spills and simplify cleanup.

“Installing FRP in a confined area required our team to think creatively about both access and equipment protection,” said Byron Searcy, Project Manager at Western Specialty Contractors. “The solution our crew developed allowed us to work more efficiently while protecting the equipment and maintaining the quality required for the installation.”

The project began in May 2026 and is scheduled for completion in October 2026. Western is performing the work within budget while coordinating closely with the project team to complete the repairs successfully.
