Western Specialty Contractors’ Atlanta Branch recently made maintenance repairs to the West Deck parking garage at Kennesaw State University (KSU) in Kennesaw, GA.
Located at 48 Campus Loop Road, Western was hired by facility management firm Ian Tierney-Walker Consultants to perform general maintenance, repairs and waterproofing on the university’s West parking structure.
Western’s scope of work included concrete repairs, epoxy injection, and routing and sealing of the deck surface. Additional specialty work included retensioning the barrier cables while adhering to the requirements set forth by the engineer on the project, Walker Consultants.
“We had to come up with an alternative method to re-tension the barrier cables in the parking garage. The engineer suggested we stress them from the end caps. After further investigation, we concluded that the engineer’s requested method would result in the endcaps being pulled out of the columns. We decided to stress the cables using turn buckles instead, which saved the customer money.”
Western started the project in May 2025 and completed it in August 2025, within budget and to the satisfaction of the facility manager.
Maintaining a concrete parking structure can be challenging. Vehicles regularly entering parking garages can leave water, oil and muck behind that can corrode the structure’s concrete and steel support system. An ineffective maintenance routine for a parking structure can quickly lead to costly repairs and restorations that are disruptive to drivers and create unexpected costs and safety concerns. Keeping up with concrete repairs and maintaining a garage’s waterproofing will help to extend the life of any busy parking structure.
Western offers a FREE Parking Garage Visual Guide & Checklist to easily identify and track damage to a parking structure’s main components, including its concrete slabs and beams, support columns, walls, drainage, and expansion and control joints. Click Here to download the FREE guide.
