Summit County Parking Garage | Akron, OH

Case Studies, Cleveland, OH, Commercial Buildings, Concrete Repair, Government Buildings, Parking Structures, Waterproofing

Western Specialty Contractors’ Cleveland branch recently performed maintenance and repairs on the Summit County Parking Garage in Akron, OH.

Located at 200 S High Street, the concrete-and-steel parking garage provides 1,140 spaces across six interior levels and an exterior top level for the Summit County Courthouse, Ohio Building, 195 Building, and Akron City Hall and Police Department. The garage is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Western was contracted by the County of Summit, Ohio, in April 2024 to perform full-depth concrete repairs, joist and column repairs, expansion joint replacement, and deck coating installation on the six interior levels, as well as concrete repairs and the application of a full traffic coating to the exterior top level.

Western kept the busy garage open during the restoration by working on half a level at a time, allowing traffic to continue.

“We used traffic cones to make alternate paths for pedestrians and traffic vehicles. Keeping a strict schedule was very important, as the county had to post public notices outlining traffic patterns to follow. We also provided a daily update to the county on the progress of the repairs,” said Branch Manager Jeff Knittel.

Western worked with the architect, Four Points Architectural Services, Inc., and the engineer, Ohlin & Reed Consulting Engineer, Inc., to complete the necessary repairs on time and within budget in May 2025.

Maintaining a concrete parking structure can be challenging. Vehicles regularly entering parking garages can leave water, oil, and muck behind, which can corrode the structure’s concrete and steel support system. An ineffective maintenance routine for a parking structure can quickly lead to costly repairs and restorations that are disruptive to drivers and create unexpected costs and safety concerns. Keeping up with concrete repairs and maintaining a garage’s waterproofing will help to extend the life of any busy parking structure.

Western offers a FREE Parking Garage Visual Guide & Checklist to easily identify and track damage to a parking structure’s main components, including its concrete slabs and beams, support columns, walls, drainage, and expansion and control joints. Click Here to download the FREE guide.
