Western Specialty Contractors – Chicago Concrete branch recently completed structural repairs and applied waterproofing to the Seascape Family Aquatic Center’s outdoor public pool in Hoffman Estates, IL.
Located in the Hoffman Estates Park District adjacent to the Poplar Creek Golf Course, the aquatic center opened in 1995 and includes an outdoor community pool featuring two tube slides, two drop slides and a zero-depth pool.
The park district determined in March 2022 that the pool’s interior was deteriorating and needed repairs. Western’s Chicago Concrete branch was hired to perform the work.
The two-month, $75,000 restoration project included replacing the existing pool liner, tile squares and expansion joint (sealant), plus performing polyurethane injections and various concrete repairs throughout the pool’s interior.
The project scope included, but was not limited to, the following:
• Expansion joint replacement (54 LF total)
• Partial depth concrete repairs (106 sq. ft.) and concrete wall repairs (25 sq. ft.)
• Polyurethane injection at deep end wall (150 lin. ft.)
• Stair tile repairs (62 sq. ft.)
• Shallow tile target Infills (30 sq. ft)
• Tile lane line infills (315 sq. ft.)
A unique challenge on the project was finding a joint sealant material that would perform underwater, fully submersed and not be affected by chlorine. After consulting with material representatives, Western decided to use Sikaflex-451 Pool – an elastomeric, chlorine-resistant hybrid sealant designed for submerged applications such as pools. Additionally, the sealant meets ASTM C-920, Type S, Grade NS, Class 50, Use NT guidelines.
Western’s concrete experts completed the project within two months, in time for the official Memorial Day pool opening, and within budget.
