11 West 42nd Street, also known as the Salmon Tower Building, is a 31-story skyscraper on 42nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City. The building, situated on the northern edge of historic Bryant Park, was designed by the architectural firm York & Sawyer and completed in 1927.
In 2020 Western Specialty Contractors’ New York branch was hired to complete the project’s DOB-mandated Local Law 11 repairs. While in great shape for its age, the building was experiencing the symptoms commonly seen by masonry structures this old. The brick masonry was cracking throughout the building, primarily at the steel lintels, columns, and spandrels. In most cases, the underlying cause was rusting, flaking, or some other sort of failure of the backup steel.
After a three-month delay due to the COVID pandemic, the Western team began work on the Salmon Tower Building in June 2020. Over 18 months, a crew of about a dozen men went to work making repairs. Over 250 lineal feet of parapet wall was rebuilt, along with over 100 lineal feet of building corners and over 8,000 square feet of repointing. Steel columns and spandrel beams, many found to be experiencing significant rusting due to water infiltration, were addressed with a combination welding on supplemental steel plates and the application of a rust-inhibitive coating system. Additional repairs included the replacement of over 80 window lintels, window perimeter sealant replacement, and crack repairs to the tile ceiling above the 43rd Street entrance.
