Western Specialty Contractors’ Los Angeles, CA Branch recently completed a project to waterproof a new foundation for the historic Grand Canyon Community Library in Arizona.
The log building, originally a schoolhouse constructed in the late 1920s, is located at 11 Navajo St. in Grand Canyon National Park, about 200 yards from the rim. The community library offers over 12,000 items, including current bestsellers, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, books, audiobooks, and a collection of materials about the Southwest.
The historic building’s foundation was failing and required replacement. The general contractor on the project, Fasone Construction, jacked up and shored the building off its existing foundation, demolished its failing crawl space and replaced it with a new foundation consisting of concrete footings, masonry walls and wood beams.
Western’s experts were called in to waterproof the new foundation before the building was set back down on it. Western installed a TREMproof 250GC cold-applied waterproofing system to the foundation’s exterior. The rapid-curing, high-solids, VOC-compliant modified polyurethane waterproofing membrane can be applied to damp and new concrete.
Western was able to complete the waterproofing project on schedule and within budget to the satisfaction of the general contractor and the building’s owner, the National Park Service.
