Western Specialty Contractors – Denver, CO Branch has completed a project to restore the concrete plaza deck at the Canyon Center in Boulder, CO.
Located at 1881 9th Street in the heart of Downtown Boulder and within walking distance of the University of Colorado, the three-story office building was constructed in 1984 and features an on-site parking garage and plaza complete with (the fire pit was previously removed and no longer exists) seating and great views of the Flatirons.
Western Specialty Contractors was hired in April 2022 to remove the plaza’s existing expansion joint and associated concrete topping slab along the joint, install new waterproofing and expansion joint, and a new topping slab at the plaza level.
Once the topping slab was removed to expose the structural post-tensioned slab below, the project engineer from uralWiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. discovered deficiencies in the structural slab, which ultimately required a significant structural upgrade.
To provide structural support, Western’s crews attached approximately 80 supplemental steel beams below the expansion joint, attached on one side of the structural slab and spanning across the expansion joint to support the cantilevered slab on the opposite side. Once this additional work was completed, Western could resume the original plan to provide a waterproof expansion joint at the structural level and a pedestrian-friendly expansion joint at the plaza level.
Despite the unexpected challenge and significant increase in scope of work, Western was able to complete the project on schedule in July 2023 and within budget.
