Western Specialty Contractors’ Austin branch completed a roof and exterior restoration project at the San Marcos Boy Scout Hut, a government-owned building in San Marcos, Texas. Serving as the prime contractor for the City of San Marcos, Western performed a variety of improvements designed to enhance the building’s weather resistance, building envelope performance, safety and long-term durability.
The project included removing and replacing the existing metal roof system and portions of the roof trusses. Western’s crews also tuckpointed masonry joints, installed protective window covers and a new door, added a chimney cap, washed the building’s exterior and applied a sealer to exposed surfaces.
Site access and protection presented several challenges during the project. Before Western could mobilize, the City needed to relocate the stone bollards at the site. Crews also had to maintain perimeter fencing throughout construction and carefully plan operations around an existing tree with an unknown root system.
Western addressed the conditions through preconstruction planning and close coordination with the City. The team used controlled staging and Connex placement while maintaining perimeter chain-link fencing and protective measures around the tree. Western also coordinated with the City on access, color approvals and other owner review items.
“This project brought together several different restoration disciplines within a relatively short schedule, so careful planning and coordination were important from the start,” said Michael Walker, Western Specialty Contractors Project Manager. “Our team worked closely with the City to address the unique site conditions while completing improvements that will help protect the building for years to come.”
By combining roof replacement, structural repairs, masonry restoration, opening protection, cleaning and sealing into a coordinated scope, Western was able to address multiple components of the building envelope as part of a single restoration project.
The project began in June 2026 and was completed in July 2026. Western finished the work within budget to the satisfaction of the City of San Marcos.
