Western Specialty Contractors’ St. Louis Roofing branch recently installed over 55,000 sq feet of roofing on BJC Healthcare’s new Plaza West Tower in St. Louis, MO.
Opened in October 2025, Plaza West Tower is a 16-story facility offering 224 private inpatient rooms, 124 surgical prep and recovery rooms, 56 private intensive care unit rooms, advanced imaging, and the latest in surgical preparation and recovery. Additional amenities include a pair of rooftop gardens, a public cafeteria and a spacious family lounge with a business center.
Plaza West Tower is located on the site of the former Queeny Tower and is part of BJC HealthCare’s Campus Renewal, a long-term vision to transform the Washington University Medical Campus through new construction and renovations, with an overall focus on improving the experiences of patients and families.
The general contractor on the project, McCarthy Building Companies, contracted with specialty roofing experts Western to install the multi-phased roof on the new 660,000 sq. ft. tower. The scope of work included the installation of a heavily insulated TPO roof system on various levels of the tower (nine areas totaling more than 39,000 sq ft.), as well as two areas of green roof, totaling over 7,300 sq ft of 215-mil hot-applied membrane and several layers of overburden. Western also installed more than 8,700 sq ft of cold-applied membrane to a split-slab section of the roof.
Western began the $8.1 million roof project in January 2024 and completed the work in August 2025, within budget.“We had one large crew on this project, and most importantly, had to schedule the project so that we didn’t have workers scrambling between the several scopes of the project,“ said Western Project Manager Thomas Belgeri. “The general contractor was also extremely helpful in making sure our superintendent was made aware of upcoming tasks in all three phases of the roof project.”
