Western Specialty Contractors – Washington DC Branch recently repaired a cargo building’s deteriorated concrete apron at a Dulles International Airport in Sterling, VA.
Western’s concrete restoration experts performed approximately 1,200 SF of concrete repairs at the busy airport. The first repair involved removing and replacing sections of deteriorated concrete along the cargo building’s airside apron.
Crews then installed new angles alongside the outer perimeter of the repair slabs according to specifications provided by the engineer on the project: Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc. Western also provided new concrete equipment pads for relocated HVAC units.
The project was not without its challenges. The complex nature of airport security meant that the repairs had to be done in a secure manner. Not only did Western have to ensure that the security protocols were followed, but they also had to work around the clock to meet tight deadlines.
The drawings showed the depth of the new concrete to be eight inches; however, after cleaning the repair locations per the inspectors’ instructions, multiple areas along the angle repairs were more than 12 inches in depth and would require the concrete to be undercut and the rebar to be replaced.
In addition to the technical challenges, Western’s concrete restoration experts also had to contend with a number of logistical issues. Working in a busy airport required them to be constantly aware of their surroundings and plan their work accordingly. This required great focus and attention to detail, and the team certainly rose to the occasion.
Despite the challenges, Western completed the project on time, within budget, and to the customer’s satisfaction.
